Before any and every journey, the driver should always do a walk-round check, ensuring as far as possible that all the following are operating or presented correctly:

• Mirrors
• Fuel tanks and caps
• Speedometer
• Tachograph
• Number plates
• Bodywork
• Brakes
• Lights and indicators
• Tyres and nuts securing the wheels
• Windscreen wipers and washers
• Horn
• Reflectors and reflective plates

• Any coupling gear

Then, during every 6-week inspection (service), all aspects of an HGV vehicle are checked and tested (lights, wiring, brakes, suspension, steering, emissions, etc.), the aim being that on any day of the year, the vehicle could pass an MOT test, and is roadworthy and safe for the driver, the load, and other road users.
